Honest answers to the questions every new raw feeder asks — from safety and cost to transitioning your pet.
🥩 What Is B.A.R.F. Raw Feeding?
The basics of BARF and biologically appropriate nutrition
BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate B.A.R.F. Raw Food. It means feeding your pet a diet that mirrors what their wild ancestors ate — raw muscle meat, organ meat, raw meaty bones, and minimal plant matter. No processing, no fillers, no by-products.
Not at all. K9GourmetBB offers raw meal plans for three species:
Dogs — Barkin' Bites (omnivore-appropriate BARF)
Cats — Finicky Felines (obligate carnivore formulation, zero carbs)
Each formula is species-specific — not a one-size-fits-all blend.
Most commercial "raw" brands are ground, blended, and often gently cooked or steamed. K9GourmetBB is whole-food, hand-prepared, small-batch BARF — every meal is made by our founder Leon using identifiable whole ingredients. You can see exactly what's in every bowl. No mystery blends, no factory floors.
Every K9GourmetBB meal is built from human-grade, Ontario-sourced animal proteins — muscle meat, organ meat, and raw meaty bones, formulated per species and life stage. The full ingredient breakdown for your pet's specific plan is provided when you order. All sourcing is Canadian, all protein is human-grade.
🛡️ Safety & Health
Addressing the most common concerns about B.A.R.F. raw feeding risks
Raw-fed pets have a naturally acidic gut environment and short digestive tract — designed to handle raw meat safely. The risk is primarily to immune-compromised humans handling the food, not the pet. We mitigate this by sourcing only human-grade inspected ingredients, maintaining cold-chain handling, and providing handling guidelines with every order. Standard food-safety hygiene is all that's required.
Cooked bones: yes — always dangerous. They splinter and can perforate the intestinal tract. Never feed cooked bones.
Raw meaty bones: safe and essential when correctly sized for your pet's breed, age, and chewing style. Every K9GourmetBB plan includes appropriately sized B.A.R.F. raw bone matched to your pet's profile.
Yes — starting young is ideal. K9GourmetBB offers dedicated Puppy Plans with calcium-to-phosphorus ratios calibrated for growth, and a Kitten Finicky Felines plan formulated for developing carnivores. Correct portioning for the animal's size and growth stage is handled for you.
Many conventional vets receive limited nutrition education during training. A growing number of integrative and holistic vets actively recommend species-appropriate B.A.R.F. raw diets. We encourage an open conversation with your vet. We can provide nutritional breakdowns of our meals on request — email us at k9gourmetltd@gmail.com.
Raw feeding is often the solution to food allergies. Most pet allergies are reactions to proteins in processed foods or additives used as fillers. K9GourmetBB offers novel protein options (rabbit, venison, duck) for pets with known sensitivities. Tell us your pet's allergy history when ordering and we'll tailor accordingly.
🔄 Transitioning to Raw
How to switch your pet without stomach upset
Every K9GourmetBB first order includes a personalised transition guide written specifically for your pet's species, age, and current diet. We walk you through the process step by step with direct support — not generic instructions. Start with a 7-Day Trial Kit →
Some pets experience a brief adjustment period when switching to B.A.R.F. raw — changes in stool consistency are normal as the gut microbiome adapts. This passes. Our transition guide (included with every first order) covers exactly what to expect and when to contact us. We're always available directly — not a ticket system.
During transition, mixing is fine. Long-term, a fully B.A.R.F. raw diet produces better results. If cost is a factor, contact us — we can work with your budget.

🐈🦦 Cats & Ferrets Specifically
Species-specific questions we hear most often
Most cats resist change initially — cats can become addicted to the palatability enhancers sprayed onto dry food. Start by placing B.A.R.F. raw food beside their current food, then gradually mix it in. Lightly warming the raw meal to body temperature helps reluctant cats accept it. Within 2–3 weeks most cats are fully transitioned.
Taurine is an essential amino acid that cats cannot synthesize — they must get it from food. Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and blindness. Heart meat and dark poultry meat are rich natural sources. Every Finicky Felines plan includes taurine-rich whole-food sources — no synthetic supplements needed.
Insulinoma is a pancreatic tumour common in ferrets over 3 years old, strongly associated with high-carbohydrate diets. Our Fuzzy Feast Senior plan is insulinoma-aware — zero carbohydrates, high animal protein, zero plant matter. A species-appropriate B.A.R.F. raw diet is the single most effective dietary intervention for reducing its progression.
